SORRY TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE ARE CLOSED FOR THE SEASON……..

After careful examination of the field we have decided to close the PATCH for another picking season. It has been one of the nicest summers we can remember (especially after last summer).

We would like to thank all of you that have managed to find your way to the farm to pick our berries. As you would surmise, our farm is about berry picking, but it’s also about the people we meet and host at the farm throughout the season. It is these brief encounters and exchanges of the summer weather, picking conditions, how to grow berries , fertilizers and yes even discussions about health related issues that make berry picking more than just the gathering of the winter’s supply for jam or berries for the freezer.

As we encounter folks and watch them interact with their friends and family members it is not hard to see that berry picking is as much a social phenomenon as it is about the food itself. It is about summer, a time with friends and family, relaxing, and enjoying a brief moment. It’s about forgetting your worries and the complicated times that we live in. Brenda and I are thankful for all of this and we hope that your experiences here at our farm have given you a bit of rest and spiritual nourishment as well as some good healthy food to take you through the coming year.

Again , we hope you enjoyed your time picking at our farm and that you take the time next summer to visit us again.

See you in the Patch!

Best,

George and Brenda Joseph

SPECIAL NOTE: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE AN EMAIL NEXT YEAR WHEN WE OPEN UP FOR PICKING, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO: george@maineblueberryfarm.com

You may need to work a little harder, but well worth the little extra time it takes, as the berries are nice and ripe. Saturday and Sunday will be the final days of the 2010 season.

Do not be caught saying “I should have picked blueberries when they were in season.” Come on out to the patch and get them before they are gone.

The picking is still very good-the best berries are on the bottoms of the bushes and inside the bushes. You can find some of the juiciest berries in those places.

See you in the Patch!

Another great summer weekend experienced. Monday it is. For some, it is back to work in the old grind. For others it is a day to choose what you want to do. Do you choose to clean your house? Do you choose to sit on the couch worrying about the family? A better choice is to come out to pick berries at Steep Hill Farm!! We will be open from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. We are closing down Tuesday and Wednesday, so come Monday if you want some for the beginning of the week!

Sunday brought lots of interesting people to the Farm: people from the Ukraine; people from Brooklyn, N.Y.; people from Livermore, Maine. What a great common ground we have-ripe blueberries that are fun to pick!

Hopefully, the humidity will be way lower on Friday than it was on Thursday. Everyone who came into the barn with blueberries said the same thing: “Whew!” on Thursday, it was so humid in the field. Didn’t stop the pickers, however, it was still a busy day.

We have had so many conversations in the barn lately. Picking blueberries seems to make people friendly and open, it seems to me. Rebecca, one of our pickers for a local farmstand, was cashing up in the barn and saw Brenda’s sister, Lori, sorting green beans from the garden. A lively conversation ensued regarding how to tell good green beans from overripe ones. Rebecca is somewhat of an expert in this as she is the “bean and berry master” of Tom Stevenson’s farm stands.

Another interesting conversation was held between two high school classmates from Winthrop High School, class of 1970: Mary Foster and Dale Hinds. They hadn’t seen each other since graduation and came upon each other in the blueberry barn. Of course they agreed they both weren’t really older than 18 on the inside, but their outsides had changed a bit… they both are eating blueberries so they’ll probably stay healthy!

One more interesting give and take was between Brenda and a couple who came to pick who told her they were both 91 years of age and had been happily married for 67 years. They were still holding hands and laughing together. The man said his wife still insisted that he kiss her good night before bedtime every night. Way to go!

Here’s to conversations that enrich our lives..

We’ll be open Friday from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. There are still loads of ripe juicy berries and excellent picking!
